Guides

Step-by-step guide to college athletic recruiting.

Recruiting feels overwhelming because no one hands you a map. Here's the year-by-year version — the steps that move real athletes from freshman year to a roster spot.

Step 1

Freshman Year: Build the foundation

  • Focus on academics — GPA in 9th grade follows you the entire way.
  • Learn the rules: NCAA D1/D2 eligibility, D3, NAIA, and junior college (JUCO) differences.
  • Start a basic athletic resume: sport, position, height, weight, stats.
  • Begin recording practices and games — you'll need film later.
Step 2

Sophomore Year: Get organized and get on film

  • Build a RosterBound profile with stats, transcript, and a 3–5 minute highlight reel.
  • Create a target list of 20–40 schools across D-I, D-II, D-III, NAIA and JUCO (NJCAA, CCCAA, NWAC).
  • Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center before junior year.
  • Attend one or two camps at schools you're genuinely interested in.
Step 3

Junior Year: Make contact

  • Email coaches directly with your film link, transcript, and schedule.
  • Take the SAT or ACT — most programs want a score on file.
  • Take unofficial visits to campuses near you.
  • Update your highlight film after each season — keep it under five minutes.
Step 4

Senior Year: Commit and sign

  • Take official visits (D1/D2 allow up to five).
  • Compare athletic, academic, financial, and personal fit — not just the offer dollar amount.
  • Sign a National Letter of Intent (NLI) or written commitment.
  • Finish strong academically — final transcripts are reviewed by admissions.

The Four Fits

It's not just about the scholarship.

Athletic Fit

Will you actually play? Look at the depth chart, recent recruiting classes, and the coach's track record at your position.

Academic Fit

Does the school offer your major? Are graduation rates for athletes strong? Will you be supported in the classroom?

Financial Fit

Compare full cost of attendance after athletic aid, academic aid, and need-based aid — not just the scholarship percentage.

Personal Fit

Distance from home, campus culture, weather, social environment, and life after sports all matter for four-plus years.
